Mark Cowper: ‘Everyone likes to peek into someone else’s world’

In 2009 Mark Cowper exhibited a series of photographs at the Geffrye Museum, London. Exhibition was called ‘Ethelburga Tower: At home in a high-rise‘ and consisted of photographs taken in Elhelburga Tower where Cowper had been living for 20 years. The photographs for the exhibition were take during one year, between summer of 2007 and 2008.

Cowper was interested in finding what his neighbours done with their flats. As he said himself for the Guardian interview “It’s fascinating how much self-expression can go into one small space. And everyone likes to peek into someone else’s world, don’t they?’

The photographs are capturing 45 flats where each demonstrates the individuality of each owner of the flat. Although the apartments are identical in architectural form the inside shows astonishing variety and styles and preferences of each owner.

Undoubtedly the article about Mark Cowper’s exhibiton that I found I kept since 2009 had a major impact on developing the idea for my final year dissertation which was focused on the idea of democratisation of design process and participation of the ‘final user’ of the space in design process….
